Truth More True than You
Our culture tells us that our thoughts and feelings are the most true thing about us. But Scripture tells a different story—our minds and hearts can be deceived. The Apostle Paul writes,
“But I am afraid that as the serpent deceived Eve by his cunning, your thoughts will be led astray from a sincere and pure devotion to Christ.” (2 Corinthians 11:3)
How we think shapes what we love and how we live. And so Satan loves to plant ideas in our minds to draw us away from Christ.
But God hasn’t left us defenseless. He gives us something stronger than our own shifting thoughts or fragile feelings: His Word, hidden in our hearts.
As the psalmist says, “I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you.” (Psalm 119:11)
When Scripture takes root in our hearts, it becomes a shield against deception. It gives us truth that is more steady than emotion and more enduring than any passing thought.
The Enemy’s Lies vs. God’s Truth
Satan’s cunning often comes as a whisper that feels like your own reasoning. But when those thoughts don’t line up with God’s Word, they are lies. Here are some common deceptions the enemy uses—and the truths of Scripture that silence him.
“If God really loved me, He wouldn’t let me go through this. His love must not be real.”
Truth: Nothing can separate you from the love of God.
“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? … No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am sure that neither death nor life … nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.” —Romans 8:35, 37–39
“God’s way isn’t best. I read things in the Bible I don’t like, so He must be holding out on me.”
Truth: God’s way is perfect and leads to deep joy.
“This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.” —Psalm 18:30
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” —Psalm 16:11
“I can’t go to God right now. I’ve messed up too much. He must be angry with me. I’ve exhausted His patience and love.”
Truth: God welcomes you with grace and forgiveness.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” —1 John 1:9
“Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” —Hebrews 4:16
“This sin is just who I am. God can’t change me.”
Truth: In Christ, you are a new creation with power over sin.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
“We know that our old self was crucified with him … so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin. … For sin will have no dominion over you, since you are not under law but under grace.” —Romans 6:6, 14
“I’ll never measure up to other Christians. I must not really belong to God.”
Truth: You belong to God because of His grace, not your performance.
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.” —Ephesians 2:8–9
“I feel so lonely. God must have abandoned me.”
Truth: God is always with you.
“Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” —Isaiah 41:10
“And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” —Matthew 28:20
“My prayers aren’t being answered. God must not care about me.”
Truth: God hears and cares deeply for you.
“When the righteous cry for help, the Lord hears and delivers them out of all their troubles. The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” —Psalm 34:17–18
“Cast all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.” —1 Peter 5:7
“I’ve messed up and missed God’s plan for my life. He must be done with me.”
Truth: God finishes what He starts and restores what is broken.
“He who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” —Philippians 1:6
“For the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” —Romans 11:29
“I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten.” —Joel 2:25
Don’t Try, Train
When it comes to resisting Satan’s lies, many of us fall into the trap of trying. We put in a little effort here or there, maybe push back against a tempting thought once or twice, but quickly find ourselves worn down. Trying is inconsistent—it depends on bursts of willpower in the moment.
Training is different. Training is about steady, consistent practice that makes you stronger over time. An athlete doesn’t just try to run a marathon; they train daily so that when the race comes, their body is ready. In the same way, we don’t just try to resist Satan’s lies in the moment of battle—we train ourselves in God’s Word so that His truth is already hidden in our hearts.
Here’s what training could look like:
-
Memorize a verse for each lie you struggle with most. If shame is your battle, plant 1 John 1:9 deep in your heart. If fear grips you, hold onto Isaiah 41:10.
-
Keep Scripture before your eyes daily. Write it on cards, set it on your phone lock screen, post it where you’ll see it. Training means repetition, over and over, until truth becomes instinct.
-
Pray the verses back to God. Don’t just recite them—turn them into conversation with Him. Let His promises shape your prayers until they become the loudest voice in your heart.
Training doesn’t happen overnight. But with consistency, you’ll grow stronger, more equipped, more rooted in truth. And then when the lies come—and they will—you won’t be scrambling to resist. You’ll be ready, armed with the living Word of God, trained to fight back with confidence.
The Final Word: God’s Love Is Unshakable
Friends, your thoughts and feelings will shift. Satan will scheme. But God’s Word is unchanging, and His love is steadfast.
There is a bloody cross that shows the cost of His love and an empty tomb that proves its power.
So don’t listen to the lies. Listen to the God who loves you and let His truth fill your mind and ground your heart.
