In the sermon this past Sunday, I took a few minutes to show how each book of the Old Testament points forward to Jesus. Several people asked if I could share that part of my notes, so I’ve posted it below. Can I preach about that to you for a minute?

In Genesis, Jesus is the Satan crusher promised in Genesis 3:15.

In Exodus, Jesus is the liberator who will bring people out of their spiritual bondage.

In Leviticus, He is the sacrifice who makes atonement for our sins.

In Numbers, He is the one who is lifted up, and any who look to him are healed of the disease of their sin.

In Deuteronomy, He is the greater Prophet than Moses, who reveals God fully to His people.

Joshua pointed forward to how Jesus would forever establish His people in the promised land of heaven.

Judges showed the need for Jesus, the rescuer who will save God’s people once and for all from all their enemies, even the enemy of our own hearts.

Ruth revealed how Jesus would be our redeemer and His redemption would be for all people.

In 1 and 2 Samuel, Jesus is the true King of God’s people who rules with love and grace

1 and 2 Kings shows how Jesus is the one who brings God’s presence and leads God’s people to faithfully follow Him

In 1 and 2 Chronicles, Jesus is the King who comes from David’s royal line.

In Ezra and Nehemiah, Jesus is the one who builds up what has been broken

Jesus is the unseen hand of God in Esther the redeemer who rescues and restores in Job, the prophet, priest, and King of Psalms the Wisdom of Proverbs, the ultimate meaning of life in Ecclesiastes and the great bridegroom of the Song of Solomon

Isaiah prophesied that Jesus would be born to a virgin and become be the suffering servant, and reigning King.

Jeremiah declared that he would make a new covenant.

Lamentations cries for his mercy and steadfast love.

Ezekiel foretold that He would remove our hearts of stone and give us spiritual hearts of flesh that love the Lord and delight in his presence.

Daniel prophesied that His Kingdom would be over all other Kingdoms and He would reign for all eternity.

Jesus is Hosea’s faithful husband who redeems and restores God’s unfaithful people, Joel’s bringer of the Spirit, Amos and Obadiah’s future King who restores God’s kingdom.

He is Jonah’s Savior. Micah’s Ruler from Bethlehem. Nahum’s refuge. Habbakuk’s Righteous one who will live—and give life—by faith.

In Zephaniah, Jesus is the one who brings the day when the Lord will rejoice over and restore His people.

In Haggai, Jesus is the temple where we now worship God forever.

In Zechariah, Jesus is the humble, victorious King who is pierced and who reigns.

Malachi, Jesus is the Lord God Himself, coming for His people.

Jesus is the fulfillment of the law and prophets- He is what the whole Old Testament is about!
